14 March 2025 Total Lunar Eclipse

A nice view this time around: earlier the following day, the weather was not looking to good for the eclipse, but we were all pleasantly surprised by the sky’s clearing and steady seeing conditions which ensued.  I was keeping the school observatory open for the few that showed up to enjoy totality at 2:30AM with the 16″ SCT open and running with its lowest magnification eyepiece.

I had my own gear set up to take some series images, something I always do with eclipses. I did have a second camera and tripod for some more artsy shots, but they are not so awesome. They just cannot show the huge dynamic range that the human eye enjoys when seeing such events.  Below are some images from the Nikon Z8 using a 500mm telephoto on an non-tracking mount…. and a few taken with my phone. Note the helpful hairdrier used to remove frost from the camera equipment.
